Without a doubt, the biggest college football game of Labor Day Weekend will occur when #3 Clemson and #7 Georgia meet on Saturday, September 4th in the Duke’s Mayonnaise College Kickoff Classic in Charlotte. It also seems very fitting that the two teams set to square off in the most authentically named Southern college football are Clemson and Georgia. The two schools separated by only about 75 miles once played each other regularly in an annual early season cross conference classic. Like they are now, Clemson and Georgia were amongst college football’s elite when they faced each other regularly in the 80’s, even swapping out national titles with each other in 80 (Georgia) and 81 (Clemson).
In a strong touch of irony, both schools tucked away in the most Southeastern part of the United States are being led by California based quarterbacks in TJ Daniels of Georgia, a USC transfer who performed well after taking over signal caller duties in mid-season, and DJ Uiagalelei who showed great promise as the next great Clemson Quarterback while putting up big numbers as a true freshman in 2020 in relief of Trevor Lawrence during his bout with Covid.
Both programs appear to be reliving their own version of a College Football Golden Age. However, with two national titles under his belt, Clemson Coach Dabo Swinnery has the Tigers on a slightly faster Gridiron Golden Age track than Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs. The spread for this high profile contest not only includes spoonfulls of Duke’s Mayonnaise evenly spread out over unlimited slices of bread, but also the bookmakers tagging Clemson as a -4 favorites according to VegasInsider.com as of July 15, 2021. Like Wonder Bread, I believe Clemson will cover. I also believe the game being in Charlotte, gives the Carolina team a little bit of an edge. Final Score prediction: Clemson 38-Georgia 31 (for entertainment purposes only, not actual gambling advice).
