GEORGIA VS TCU

The Georgia vs TCU matchup for the National Championship seems to represent not only a battle between the two contestants, but also one between two different themes being played out. A Georgia win would give them back to back National Championships and certainly solidify the Dawgs as College Football’s new dynasty taking the reign away from Alabama. A Horned Frog victory would represent the ultimate conquest of the underdog, or more appropriate, the underfrog, as TCU wasn’t even ranked during the preseason. It would be a season that would go down in college football season lore. Movies and documentaries would be made 40 years from now about TCU’s undefeated 2022 season. The Horned Frogs’ highly overachieving season is even made more awing as they have done it all under first year Head Coach Sonny Dykes. Subjectively, I’m a little conflicted. Naturally, I am SEC biased. However, as a lifelong Mississippi State fan, I also feel that I can empathize with the underdog plight of TCU far more than I can with Georgia. Coming off their national championship season, Georgia’s successful quest to remain unbeaten so far, has been filled with a mixture of victory styles. Multiple times during the season the Dawgs have had to fight off a pesky underdog such as their 26-22 win over Missouri and a 16-6 victory over Kentucky. Other times they have displayed complete dominance over high quality opponents such as their 49-3 season opening thrashing of Oregon and 27-14 smashing of #6 ranked Tennessee. The New Year’s Eve semifinal matchups between TCU and Michigan and Georgia vs Ohio State was college football entertainment at its finest. After jumping out to a big early lead, the Horned Frogs held off a late Wolverine rally to emerge victorious while on the opposite end, Georgia set off on a 4th Quarter surge to overcome a double digit Ohio State lead after being completely dominated for most of the game. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Casino Sportsbooks collectively have Georgia hovering around a 12 point favorite while the over/under is set at 62.5. TCU has more than proven themselves this season that it is not wise to bet or root against them. However, Georgia has also displayed a characteristic this season of playing their best football after being shaken up a little, and they were certainly shaken up significantly against the Buckeyes before pulling themselves together in the 4th Quarter. It’s just my opinion, but a big factor in determining the outcome of the National Championship game, is whether Georgia will still be riding the momentum from their 4th Quarter comeback against Ohio State. I sense that they will and it will be enough to overcome the underdog momentum TCU has been riding all season. Even though it won’t rise to the level that we saw on display New Year’s Eve, Monday Night’s National Championships will have its share of them on the field as well. Prediction: Georgia will barely cover the 12 point spread and win 41-27 while those betting on the Over also win. (To be used for entertainment purposes only and not as actual gambling advice.)
