Georgia Covers, Wins National Championship.

For the majority of last night’s National Championship match between Georgia and Alabama, I was upset with myself for picking Georgia over Alabama. For three quarters, Alabama still seemed to have the mental edge over Georgia as those Silver Britches struggled to regain the perfect form they had put on display all season until their 41-24 skid in the SEC Championship game against the Crimson Tide. While watching the game, it felt as if there was a voice in my head that kept saying, “Thou shall not pick against Alabama for the National Championship game” which I had obviously violated.

I was not alone in my thinking. The oddsmakers at the Gulf Coast Casinos had Georgia as a -2.5 favorite, assuming feeling that their earlier loss would make them more focused in the rematch. The hunger and focus had didn’t effectively materialize until late in the game when the Dawgs rallied from an 18-13 deficit, to score 20 points in the 4th quarter and win 33-18.

The Dawgs obviously covered the -2.5 spread, but during the early 4th quarter it looked like one scenario that could play out would have left Georgia hanging onto a 19-18 victory and not covering, had their not been any additional scoring after their two point conversion on the go ahead touchdown failed. Yet the momentum surge came on even stronger as the Bulldogs found the end zone two more times, while Alabama’s offense struggled in the absence of their best playmaker Jameson Williams who left the game earlier with an injury.

Bets on the under may have been a little more anxious. While seeming a like a sure winner for the most of the game, late game scoring suddenly seemed to threaten the consensus 52 point under/over total. Yet, “the under” held on as the 51 point total fell just short of it.

My 27-17 final score prediction was just 7 points off of the final score. But the scoring timing was far different than what I assumed it would be. I had assumed that Georgia would take a one to two touchdown lead midway through the second quarter and hold onto it, not that they would need a 4th Quarter scoring surge to claim victory and the BCS Title.

The 2022 College Football Season will start nearly 9 months from now. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s another rematch
